I attended the clinic that Stu did with Dave DiCenso (on drums). The
format was Dave played for 45 minutes, Stu for 45, then they jammed,
then they did questions, then autographs. Pretty straight foreward.
Quick note: Dave is quite good on drums. It is funny to watch him play
because he literally detaches from this world and his body language
and expressions (and grunts) can be quite comical. He wasn't lying
when he said before he started his brain would detach and music would
just flow!
So Stu comes out and goes "Dave, you need to do an extra long intro for
me because I need to blow my nose and there are no tissues in that room!"
and proceeds to go off to another part of the store. Quite funny. It
really set the mood for the whole event. Pretty much Stu would tell
a story about something, then play a song. Here's the set list:
- Star Spangle Banner
- My Boss Drives a Mercedes and I make minimum wage plus tips
- Ti Extrano
- Flow My Tears
- Abbey Sonata or Moonlight Road
- Ann, you bitch I never want to see your face again
- Medly - America->linus n lucy->Love Boat-> ? (It was an extended suped up version of the song he goes into after linus n lucy on his first vid)->Count Zero->Sexually Active->Country Music
He did play quite well, flubbed a couple notes, but that happens to everybody. You can tell what things he plays a lot and what he doesn't. Like sexually active and country music. He was playing country music and was looking at us with this bored look in his face, then started to doze off. (Well, he pretended to!) quite funny! Man.. I had no idea how funny the guy is. I forget the exact wording but before star spangled banner he goes "In honor of Columbus day, or as we call it in California 'Start of the Genocide of Indiginous People Day'". I got some photos you can look at. Sorry some are blurry. My camera sucks.
After that Dave came out and they did an improv jam. It started out kind of slow, but then they found their groove. They seemed to be communicating quite well with each other musically. They had some great intense parts. I love it when two musicians jam. They can read each other and just wonderful things come out. A funny part: they both stop and Dave goes "what are you doing?" "I'm waiting for you" "oh" heheh. Nice guys!
Now, onto the part you really care about - INFO! They are in no paticular order of significance
- Signed a 10 cd deal with CBS... he gets 10 cd's for $1! (He got me with that one. I started writing it down!)
- Just finished recording an 11 track Rush tribute. Due out next year. He said it will annoy big rush fans because he did his own thing on bass.
- He has music for a record brewing. He doesn't know when it will be recorded, but it is different from his other stuff. He said it is sort of experimental, and he's probably going to have strings on it. "I suppose you could call it music. I don't know how commerically viable it is"
- He'd love to do a live album
- He's going to be doing more gigs around the San Fransisco area with his band
- Turned down a few road gigs because he didn't want to be away from Charlotte (who is three now)
- GHS tour IS looking to be a possibility!!
- He thinks the chapman stick is good, but he simply has no time to learn it - he wouldn't want to do it half assed. "If I had three years to spare, I'd love to. The other thing is the sound isn't quite there.. not enough low punch"
- He switched to Peavey because they have more low end and more "sparkle". His first amp was a Peavey and he liked it. He's also working with them to design an amp. He couldn't mention details but he said he likes it and they'll probably show it at NAMM
- Even on the new peavey setup he still flatlines the EQ
- Wrist Care - He said most any chiropracter can help you out. It is important to do stretches and exersizes - if you start to hurt - STOP!.
- On strengthening hands: lots of exersizes. "I also like squeezing balls. you know like.. wait, that didn't come out right!"
- On fast playing: when he is doing fast plucking (not tapping) he only uses two fingers not 3-4 like Sheehan.
- Nowadays he uses the chorus in his little Peavey combo amp. I forget the model. Bad Jeff!
So thats it for now!
